Almost 300 people reached UK in small boats on day of Channel death

Home Office says 292 people made crossing on Friday, when one person drowned and another was left in critical condition

Almost 300 people crossed the Channel from France to England in small boats on the same day a person died when a vessel sank off the French coast.

The Home Office said 292 people made the crossing in seven boats on Friday.
