Government wants to reduce the number of daily smokers to below 10% of the population

Australians already pay some of the highest tobacco tax in the world, but a pack of cigarettes will become even dearer as the government aims to reduce the number of daily smokers to below 10% of the population by 2025 and below 5% by 2030.

According to data collected by the Cancer Council of Victoria, the cost of a pack of 25 or 30 cigarettes has increased from a few dollars in the early 90s to well over $40 in recent years.
