Courage from Lebung Itam

Meet Jay, a villager from South Sumatra, Indonesia, who refuses to give up after peatland fires devastated his livelihood. Alongside 10 fellow residents, Jay is taking legal action against three major plantation companies responsible for these fires. Linked to Sinar Mas, these companies - PT Bumi Mekar Hijau, PT Bumi Andalas Permai, and PT Sebangun Bumi Andalas Wood Industries - have long contributed to the chronic haze that has harmed their communities. The sad reality is that: The fires have burned over 254,787 hectares, almost four times the size of Jakarta. Local residents have suffered health issues, including respiratory problems, and face serious economic losses from disrupted farming and fishing. Despite government sanctions, peatland fires continue to burn, contributing to widespread haze pollution in 2015, 2019, and 2023. Peatlands are vital carbon sinks, and their destruction significantly worsens the global climate crisis. Jay and his fellow villagers are fighting for justice and the right to a healthy environment.
