Five people died in a catastrophic three-vehicle crash near the Victoria and New South Wales border, shortly after police pulled over the speeding driver of one of the cars involved.

Police initially said the collision at the intersection of the Murray Valley Highway and Labuan Road at Strathmerton on Thursday claimed three lives but the death toll was increased to five on Friday.
