The nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) commits the UK, and other nuclear-armed states, to general and complete nuclear weapons disarmament.
State parties to the treaty meet regularly to discuss progress – or lack thereof – with the treaty, most recently in Geneva in July 2024. CND representatives attended to make the case for strengthening the treaty so that it achieves its original aim – a world without nuclear weapons.
While at the conference, CND organised a side event to make the case against a European nuclear weapons system, which has been discussed by some on the continent in recent months. The anti-nuclear movement argues against such a possibility: proliferation is not the answer to European security concerns.
