Call for protests follows clashes in Tbilisi over ‘Russian law’ critics say could harm efforts to become EU member state

Georgia is facing a fresh round of protests as anger mounts over the parliament’s initial backing of a law that critics say would limit press freedom and undercut the country’s efforts to become a candidate for EU membership.

Protests erupted in the capital, Tbilisi, on Tuesday evening after Georgia’s parliament passed the first reading of the law, which would require some organisations receiving foreign funding to register as “foreign agents”.
