Holiday weekend brings record heat to Florida and deadly storms to Texas

Cities in Florida saw temperatures inch toward 100F while seven dead were reported in Texas as a tornado swept across the north

Several cities in Florida broke heat records during the Memorial Day weekend, as a wave of extreme weather and soaring temperatures hit swaths of the southern US and left more than 700,000 people in Texas without power.

According to the National Weather Service Miami, the city of West Palm Beach reached a daily record high of 97F on Monday, breaking the previous record high of 96F set in 1928.
