The Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi has apologised to his wife on social media after his wedding ring was lost in the River Seine during Friday’s Olympic Games opening ceremony.
Tamberi, who made headlines at the Tokyo Games when he shared high jump gold with Qatar’s Mutaz Barsham, was Italy’s male flag bearer for the boat parade through the French capital. In an Instagram post to his wife, Chiara Bontempi Tamberi, he poetically described the moment that the ring slipped from his finger.
