The final hearing of the Jan. 6 committee is expected to make history by voting to issue a criminal referral against Donald Trump, among others. According to reports, the committee will vote to refer Trump to the Justice Department on charges of insurrection, obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress, and conspiracy to defraud the United States. While the Justice Department is in no way compelled to act on such a referral from Congress, it already has its own investigation underway.
“I think the president has violated multiple criminal laws,” Rep. Adam Schiff said on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday. “And I think you have to be treated like any other American who breaks the law, and that is, you have to be prosecuted.”
