Job opening: Secretary General

1 year ago 68

The Club of Rome is looking for a Secretary General to ensure that the day-to-day operations of the organisation are run effectively and ensure that our agreed strategy is translated into a viable plan and executed accordingly.

The Club of Rome co-presidents represent the organisation and promote it globally, and over recent years the activities and visibility of The Club of Rome have increased tremendously. The Secretary General will provide the executive support needed to enable the presidents to focus on expanding the degree of engagement of the organisation, by taking care of operational management and administration.

The successful candidate will be able to quickly grasp the essence of The Club of Rome, from their existing understanding of the organisations work and legacy. They will have a global network that can be tapped to meet funding needs and other mission objectives.

The Secretary General, whilst not the global face of The Club of Rome will be expected to work closely with the co-presidents to represent the organisation internationally and contribute to raising its profile in partnership with the co-presidents and other members of the executive committee. The Secretary General will not be a member of the executive committee, their first point of contact will be the co-presidents and will also work with the executive committee accordingly.

Key responsibilities and strategic challenges

  • Manage a team of highly motivated and self-organising secretariat staff based in numerous locations across the globe.
  • Strengthen the profile of The Club of Rome, deepen the thematic focus across the five impact hubs and ensure a systems perspective across all of our activities.
  • Revitalise and enhance engagement with our members and the broader community, including national associations across the globe.
  • Maintain and further develop a stable financial situation, and increase the level of (core) funding.
  • Further develop existing strategic partnerships and explore and establish new relationships in order to fulfil our mission.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, enabling the team and members of the executive committee to fulfil their respective roles more effectively.
  • Support internal governance processes such as Executive Committee and General Assembly of Members meetings.

 Profile and experience

  • Strategic thinker with practical and managerial skills (not a micro-manager) and entrepreneurial spirit and background. Ability to delegate, both upwards and downwards.
  • Knowledge of The Club of Rome, its work, and the external environment within which it operates.
  • Strong alignment with the essence of The Club of Rome, and the ability to act as a credible representative of the organisation.
  • Record of obtaining (core) funding for similar organisations, with proven experience in being a credible and trusted partner for funders, and the ability to ‘close a deal’.
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and dialogue skills
  • A global citizen, ideally with on-the-ground experience in different parts of the world, and the ability to encourage/create/develop a diverse community.
  • The ability to convene people, connect ideas, and leverage peoples’ knowledge and insights, taking a servant leadership approach (not about ‘me’ but about ‘we’).
  • Affinity with financial-, people management- and governance topics
  • The ability to translate ideas into feasible projects that align with our strategy, and ensure effective implementation
  • An inspiring and accessible leader
  • Being a member of The Club of Rome is not a requirement.

Employment conditions

  • This is a full-time fixed-term position under Swiss law
  • The position involves remote working with extensive travel to The Club of Rome’s HQ in Winterthur, Switzerland or the satellite office in Brussels, Belgium, or other meeting locations as required.
  • The ideal candidate will be based in Europe to be able to travel relatively quickly to the main offices in Winterthur and Brussels
  • Renumeration will be dependent on location and experience (indicative EUR 125.000 gross)
