Josh Hawley to introduce resolution condemning Hamas and actions on college campuses critical of Israeli government

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) will introduce a resolution condemning Hamas and actions on college campuses critical of the Israeli government in the aftermath of a wave of protests around the country.

“My resolution unequivocally condemns Hamas and the hateful, antisemitic rhetoric that the recent terrorist attack has inspired on our college campuses. This is particularly urgent given the rise in threats against Jewish Americans across our country,” Hawley wrote in a dear colleague obtained by POLITICO.

His resolution, which the Missouri senator intends to seek consent to pass this week, would condemn the “rhetoric of anti-Israel, pro-Hamas student groups as antisemitic, repugnant and morally contemptible,” denounce the terrorist attacks, acknowledge Israel’s right to defend itself and encourage the U.S. government to “fully and completely” support Israel.

Protests have popped up on campuses around the U.S. in the aftermath of the violence that has killed thousands. The flood of activity has increased pressure on the Education Department to release a long-delayed proposal that could curb protests on college campuses.

It’s unclear if Democrats would grant unanimous consent for the Hawley resolution to advance expeditiously.
