President seeks to ‘ensure country’s stability’ during transition after green-left alliance’s surprise electoral win

Emmanuel Macron has asked the French prime minister, Gabriel Attal, to stay on “for the time being” to “ensure the country’s stability” after a snap general election left France facing a hung parliament and fraught negotiations to form a new government.

The president called the ballot last month after suffering a humiliating defeat to the far-right National Rally (RN) of Marine Le Pen in European parliamentary elections, but in the end it was a green-left alliance that emerged as the surprise winner.
