Nuclear Transportation Accident: has already happened. It can happen again

3 years ago 322

One of the most impressive nuclear transports of recent decades is underway these days. The route from Great Britain reaches the Biblis interim storage facility in Germany by rail. The German anti-nuclear activists are busy, in these hours, garrisoning the main transit points. But the thing does not end there: many of the radioactive waste is in turn directed towards Eastern Europe and also towards storage sites in Russia: we have in fact witnessed numerous actions by Russian activists during the month of September.

Let us retrace some events, and chronicleas, that characterized these nuclear transports in the past.

10 septembre 1987 : wagon transportant du combustible irradié stationnant en gare d'Achères (Yvelines).

February 4, 1997 - spent fuel wagons derailed at 28 km / h at a station in the agglomeration of Apach (Moselle).

During the year 97 precisely a fifth of the convoys from Germany had very high levels of contamination (up to 13,000 Bq / cm2) but this will remain secret until the crisis of May 98 (see story Mycle Schneider, on the original source link below).

This February 4, 97, the prefect was warned one hour after the derailment but he had no information (contents of the wagon?) And did not know who had authorized the transport. 35 hours later; he still won't know who is competent so that the train can start again and he will make the decision on him.

Two hours after the derailment, the Radiological Intervention Unit (CMIR) informed "of the absence of radioactive leaks" (SIC). This finding will be "confirmed" (re-SIC) 7 hours later by CEA and OPRI agents.

Some thoughts of the two prefecture officials leave one wondering:

"This is how the CEA and OPRI experts agreed, contrary to their custom, to measure radioactivity without wearing a suit, otherwise their reassuring message on the absence of leaks would not have had credibility with the local population. ", nor railway workers, one might add, who will therefore have had no reason to work differently than usual.

Le 04 février 1997 - des wagons de combustible irradié déraillent à 28 km/h en gare dans l'agglomération d'Apach (Moselle).

Nuclear train derails near Paris

24-12-2013

French authorities on Monday said a train carrying nuclear waste has derailed in a Paris suburb, but no leaks, injuries or other problems have been reported.

An official with the national fire service said experts carried out radiological tests after the incident in Drancy, and found no leaks.

The official said the train was travelling slowly and went about 50 centimetres off the rails, and an investigation will be carried out.

The official was not authorised to be publicly named, according to fire service policy.

Jean-Michel Genestier, deputy director of rail company SNCF Geodis, said on BFM television that it was “a minor incident.”

Drancy Mayor Jean-Christophe Lagarde expressed concern about the safety of the nuclear and chemical trains that pass regularly through his town.
