A new “personhood” law is the latest Republican attempt at taking away abortion rights. Under the guise of protecting unborn children, the Virginia bill focuses on a pregnant person's fetus and declares it as a passenger in a car, as a result making it legal for a pregnant person to use the car pool lane or HOV on highways.
Pre-filed in the General Assembly on Tuesday by Republican lawmaker Nick Freitas, HB 1894 "provides that a pregnant woman shall be considered two people for the purposes of determining occupancy" in high-occupancy vehicles and high-occupancy toll lanes on expressways in the state.
