There are a “record” 100,000 people who have sought asylum onshore who remain in Australia including 72,875 whose claims were refused who are yet to be deported.
Abul Rizvi, the former deputy secretary of the immigration department, said there is “no simple solution” to the policy failure, which leaves people vulnerable to labour market exploitation.
