For Joe Biden to visit Ukraine safely, the White House spirited him out of the country in the middle of the night and made reporters traveling with him swear a temporary oath of secrecy – none of which could protect the president from attacks by Republicans.

What else is happening? Oleh Syniehubov, the governor of Kharkiv region, has posted to Telegram to report that two people have been injured in Russian strikes on the city of Kharkiv this morning, where there have been reports of at least four explosions.

Who is winning in Ukraine – and what will happen next? There are different ways to assess this. Neither Russia nor Ukraine is close to achieving its stated war aims, which in Ukraine’s case involves liberating all occupied territory. However, during the past 12 months Moscow has had to repeatedly retreat from its maximalist ambitions to focus on capturing all of the Donbas, in the east. Moreover, Russian losses have been huge.

Why is Yevgeny Prigozhin in the news? The head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group has said Moscow’s military chiefs are refusing to supply the group with munitions and are seeking to destroy it, accusing them of “treason”, in an escalation of the war of words between senior Russian officials and the private army boss.
