Republicans like to run against 'woke,' but right now they are demonstrating the meaning of 'weak'

Republicans can’t actually provide a definition of “woke,” but they know they’re against it. Their voters are soundly asleep, thank you.

However, Republicans clearly like “weak.” They must, because right now they’re standing on the floor of the House of Representatives demonstrating weakness in every possible way. And in this extended documentary on what happens when 222 close-minded narcissists get together, no one has done more to get across the spirit of a well-used Kleenex than would-be speaker Kevin McCarthy.

In his efforts to gain the speakership, McCarthy has surrendered everything that makes that position worth having. He’s given away his authority over committees. He’s promised to do the bidding of people who hate him when it comes to the legislative agenda. He’s given away everything except the office and the gavel … and he’s open to negotiating about the office.

The people who are supporting McCarthy are supporting him not because he’s a leader who can set the agenda, a forceful negotiator who can pull together game-changing legislation, or even someone they trust to do the right thing. The people who are supporting McCarthy are supporting him because he’s weak. The only thing they want from him is the one thing he’s good at: folding at the first sign of pressure.
