TikTok Walmart retirement is a thing, but sure, the retirement age is too low

“What is the ideal retirement age for your health?” The New York Times asks in its Well section, in a piece framing “ideal retirement age” as the age until which a person can work without their work output being compromised. Retirement should not be a few years of reasonably healthy non-work, in this piece of thinly veiled propaganda for raising the Social Security age. It should be what happens when a worker is no longer of use to their employer.

The article opens by telegraphing where it’s going, with a big misrepresentation of life expectancy deployed to misrepresent the historic role of retirement programs and lay the groundwork for the argument that the retirement age should be significantly higher.
