Eight residents had to be evacuated from a rooftop in the middle of the night, as Tropical Cyclone Jasper brought heavy rains and damaging winds to far north Queensland.

Residents took shelter as the category 2 storm hit late on Wednesday afternoon, and winds of about 100km/h uprooted trees and brought down powerlines, leaving tens of thousands of homes without power.
