The inquiry will begin hearings into regional branch closures next month in Gippsland

Westpac has said it will pause plans to close regional bank branches while a Senate inquiry into the impact of regional bank closures takes place, joining the Commonwealth Bank as the second of the big four to promise a temporary stay on bank closures.

It comes just a week after Westpac announced it would close 20 branches this year, including eight in regional Australia. On Wednesday, a spokesperson from Westpac said no decisions on the future of other branches would be made during the inquiry.
