Just in time for Christmas travel, the nation has been hit with widespread extreme weather, and extreme really is the right word. Power outages are common across the country thanks to high winds, hitting Kentucky, Ohio, Georgia, Oregon, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Texas, and more. More than 3,200 flights have been cancelled on Friday, following 2,700 cancellations on Thursday.
Winter Storm Elliott has brought snow, but it’s not producing huge accumulations. The arrival of snow and ice in areas not accustomed to dealing with it and the high winds and extreme cold are posing more of a danger. Some parts of the Great Lakes are seeing flooding due to the wind.
The past couple days have brought some truly jaw-dropping weather. Temperatures dropped 37 degrees in less than an hour in Denver on Wednesday afternoon, part of an overall 75-degree temperature swing from Wednesday to Thursday and coming with around 4 inches of snow. In Amarillo, Texas, the temperature dropped 42 degrees in six hours. In Casper, Wyoming, it dropped 70 degrees in less than 18 hours. In Kansas City, Missouri, it dropped 30 degrees in six hours.
Rapid temperature drops are still coming in some places. The northeast and mid-Atlantic are expecting flash freeze conditions, with temperatures dropping from well above freezing to well below freezing in a matter of hours following a heavy rain, potentially leading to extremely icy conditions. Even Florida is expected to get cold enough to send iguanas dropping from trees, stunned by the cold.
